STAND UP MONROE
A community accountability project examining Monroe's Shop Monroe First
Community trust should never become someone’s personal marketing asset.
Shop Monroe First presents itself as a community-first initiative supporting Monroe County businesses. But when one privately controlled platform decides who is “preferred,” controls the conversation, overlaps with its founder’s commercial interests, and reportedly blocks or removes people who ask questions, the community has every right to look closer.
Stand Up Monroe exists because local businesses deserve more than promotion. They deserve transparency, fair representation, clear standards, and the freedom to speak without fear of being silenced.
We are documenting the public record, examining Shop Monroe First’s messaging, and collecting firsthand experiences from residents and business owners.
Why This Matters
We stand for Monroe’s businesses—not the private platforms that use them to build influence.
Monroe County’s businesses are built by people who invest their money, labor, reputations, and lives into this community. They deserve support that is transparent, inclusive, and accountable.
When a privately operated platform presents itself as a trusted voice for local business, the public should be able to understand how decisions are made.
Who determines which businesses are “preferred”? What standards are applied? What commercial interests overlap with the platform? Who provides oversight? And what happens when residents or business owners ask those questions publicly?
These are not petty objections. They go directly to trust.
Residents have reported being blocked, muted, or removed after raising concerns. Business owners have described experiences that do not align with the polished community-first image presented publicly. Shop Monroe First’s own content raises legitimate questions about whether the platform consistently centers Monroe businesses—or the individual operating it.
A platform cannot claim the credibility of the community while avoiding the accountability that should come with it.
Monroe’s businesses are not content. They are not props. Their reputations should not be used to strengthen a private brand without clear standards, informed participation, and honest disclosure.
Stand Up Monroe exists to preserve the record, examine publicly available evidence, and provide a place for people to speak openly about their experiences.
These concerns should not disappear because they are inconvenient.
They should be answered.
